        VIGNETTES
        of the
        TEXAS RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL

( UPPER LEFT) The "cleanup" cart for spare parts and leftovers at the haunted dungeon--though methinks a mop and bucket would be just as handy in a place like that! Can you imagine being the night janitor in the Chateau du Macabre...? (UPPER RIGHT) The rickshaw driver offering rides around the fairegrounds, seeks new fares among the crowd.

(UPPER RIGHT) While strolling around by the Players' Podium, I was surprised to hear this rich, mellow voice seemingly from nowhere, apparently singing madrigals. It took me a moment to locate the singer--high up in this tower! Although I'm admittedly no connoisseur of medieval/renaissance music, his impromptu performance was excellent to my ear!

(UPPER LEFT) One of the lighter moments occured as the Pirates waited to fire their cannons in salute to the King and his new bride. According to the photographer, the gunner's mate started the day with his eyepatch on his left eye--and ended it with the patch over his right. Here the Captain tests to see if the gunner can see out of either eye: sort of a buccaneer version of a Three Stooges skit! (photo by John Dunn). (UPPER RIGHT) The Jolly Roger flies again! This was a slightly different variant on the old "Skull and Crossbones" of the well-known pirate flag. (photo by John Dunn).

The Cursing Well at TRF--throw in a penny and curse your enemies! Although when you really think about it: for a penny, how much of a curse are they really going to get???! We didn't take any chances--we threw in QUARTERS!!!
